How I made simple beaded icicle earrings

I featured these simple beaded icicle earrings in last week newsletter and we had a couple of queries asking for instructions and guidance on how to make them. So I’ve decided to do just that. The elegant design is very simple to make, so you could easily make a pair for everyone this Christmas, while watching your favourite festive film!

I made these frosty earring after Hana commented that the pendants reminded her of icicles. These lovely rounded pointy Preciosa drops are perfect for making earrings as well as wintery decorations. As this drop has a fine delicate point to the top I decided to add beading above. I used supplemax thread and simple cross-over technique.

Here’s how I made the beaded icicle

Materials needed
45 – 60cm x 0.25mm supplemax thread
8 x 3mm Preciosa crystal AB bicone beads
8 x 4mm Preciosa crystal AB bicone beads
2 x 5mm Preciosa crystal AB bicone beads
2 x 9x15mm Drop Pendant Crystal AB Preciosa Crystal
2 x Sterling Silver Fishhooks

Cut a 25-30cm length of 0.25mm supplemax (0.15mm will also work). Thread on 1 x 4mm bicone, 1 x 3mm bicone, followed by the pendant drop and another 3mm and 4mm bicone bead. Let these beads sit in the centre of your thread.

Holding the ends of your thread in each hand, scoop up a 5mm bicone on one side (keep hold of it), then thread the other end of the thread through the 5mm bead in the opposite direction (creating a cross over inside the bead). Pull the threads tight and make sure it’s still roughly in the centre of the thread.

On each end of the thread pick up 1 x 4mm and 1 x 3mm bead and let these slide down towards the 5mm bead. Tie the two ends of thread together securely; a reef knot is ideal, or two over hand knots. Thread through a few more beads to secure and trim off the excess.

Twist open the loop of your fishhook, I used one of our simple Sterling Silver Fishhook and hook under the thread in-between the two 3mm beads at the top. Repeat this to create your second earring.
