Necklace Ends, Spring Ends and Envelope Clasps

Jewellery Findings - Necklace Ends When creating jewellery it is a necessity to be able to finish the project, in most cases, a clasp of some type. This page is devoted to some of the components available and most commonly used for this purpose. All of our findings are low nickel. < Main Index < Findings Index Necklace Ends, also known as calottes or clamshells, are used to attach the necklace or bracelet thread to one of many types of clasp. This component is used with thin threads such as Beadalon, Softflex & Softtouch as well as nymo, dandyline and monofilament (supplemax). As pictured, these necklace ends are available in silver or gold plate.

Spring Ends Spring ends are primarily used for cotton bootlace cord, insert the cord into the open end of the spring end and crush the last ring against itself with flatnose/chainnose pliers. If you then rotate the spring end by 180 degrees and squeeze the crushed ring into the centre, this will ensure the cord hangs evenly. These ends will accommodate a 2mm thread very snuggly, whereas if you use a 1mm thread then we recommend that you double the end over before pushing it inside the spring end. One excellent feature of this clasps is that you can recycle it several times by just cutting off the crushed ring and inserting a new thread and start all over again!

< Main Index < Findings Index Envelope Clasp (Fold Over Clasps) When using these clasps, fold one flap down and then the second on top using flatnose/chainnose pliers. Give the clasps on final squeeze just to be sure!

Extension Chains Extension chains are always a useful component to have when making necklaces and bracelets, especially when you're not quite sure of the size you need to make. These also allow the wearer to either loosen or tighten their piece of jewellery. These are available in silver or gold plate and will extend a piece of jewellery by upto 7 cm (2.75 inches). As the picture shows, each extension chain is finished with a decorative drop bead.

< Main Index < Findings Index Filigree Cone Ends These components are used at the end of a multi-strand necklace where several strands meet and have to be concealed. In order to use these findings it is necessary to create an eyepin from wire, for example use 0.8mm, with a long tail. Each strand of your threaded beads are then connected to the eye of this pin. Then feed the pin end of the loaded eyepin up from the wide open end until the pin sticks out of the the tapered end of the cone. Your beaded threads will have disappeared inside the cone at this stage. To secure the threads inside the cone create another eye at the end of your pin. This will keep the tension and stop the threads from pulling the pin back into the cone. This also gives you a loop in which to connect your clasps!
